A new report shows Americans are becoming dependent on the powerful painkiller diclofenac sodium, even though the painkillers are approved for overuse.
Dr. Robert M. Karp, head of the FDA’s Office of Drug Evaluation and Marketing, said the new drug, called Voltaren, “is one of a series of oral and topical therapies to help patients with arthritis, osteoarthritis and other joint pain.”
“Diclofenac sodium is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug that is available over the counter,” he said. “It’s designed to reduce inflammation in arthritis and other conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.”
The new drug will help treat pain associated with the inflammation in the body and treat pain associated with arthritis, which includes muscle and joint pain.
